After the book was released, Izetbegovic´ was convicted of distributing anti-government material and in 1983 was sentenced to 14 years in prison. An excerpt of the book follows: Therefore, to properly understand our position in the world means to submit to God, to find peace, not to start making a more positive effort to encompass and to overcome everything, but rather a negative effort to accept the place and the time of our birth, the place and the time that are our destiny and God’s will. Submission to God is the only human and dignified way out of the unsolvable senselessness of life, a way out without revolt, despair, nihilism, or suicide.

S. president Jimmy Carter initiated a meeting between Bosnia’s Serbs and the Bosnian government. They negotiated a fourmonth long truce that began on New Year’s Day, 1995. However, the treaty did not include the people of the Serbian republic, now part of the new Yugoslavia. It did not matter much, since the truce between the Bosnian Serbs and the Bosnian government did not hold. Some of the bloodiest violence of the war was yet to come. On April 8, Bosnian Serbs attacked airplanes carrying aid to Bosniak war refugees.

Bosnian Serbs retaliated by kidnapping and holding more than 350 United Nations peacekeepers hostage. Leaders of the Serbian republic who wanted to improve their relations with the United States and western Europe managed to help negotiate the hostages’ release. Incident at Srebrenica One hotly contested spot was the city of Srebrenica, about 10 miles from the Serbian border. It had been designated one of several United Nations safe areas, and refugees were being protected there by about 600 members of the Dutch infantry, part of the peacekeeping units.
