The Eurocentric image of the world also was not limited to spatial classifications. 14 The unbreakable connection between modernity and Eurocentrism led not to a surrender of the latter but to an incorporation of the “other” into European modernity.
But it becomes more complicated when one takes into account the ethnocentric perspective on which any attempt to define Europe is based. 2 Thus, any attempt to escape the Eurocentric trap when using Europe as a point of reference might be impracticable, but it seems to be useful in differentiating heuristically between Europe as cultural construct and as geographical entity. The term Western emphasizes the cultural dimension of the term Europe. It signifies more than the geographic landmass of Europe since it also includes those countries that owe their cultural heritage in whole or in part to the European tradition.
